Tesla’s Cybertruck unveiling shatters everyone’s expectations

The auto industry has never seen a vehicle reveal quite like the show that Tesla CEO Elon Musk put on last week. Not only is the design of Tesla’s Cybertruck so bizarre that even those in attendance weren’t sure if it was the real thing, but the event went off-script when Tesla’s chief designer, Franz von Holzhausen, smashed its windows in an attempt to prove they were unbreakable.

Among the reactions to whatever that was:

“Looks like a DeLorean had a baby with Walter White’s Pontiac Aztek. Or something an 8-year-old built in Minecraft.”

Ryan Mac, Buzzfeed

“There’s almost a level of awe to just how much the Cybertruck’s hard geometric curves evoke the soulless polygonal graphics of fifth-generation gaming. One worries it’ll start glitching the moment you drive next to a wall.”

Randall Colburn, The A.V. Club

“It almost looks like a deliberate, suicidal attempt to trigger boundary separation — a potential drag-raising catastrophe for limited-energy EVs. And an odd 180 turn from the Model X and Y, which have such delicately arched profiles precisely to avoid drag-raising trip wires like this.”

Kim Reynolds, MotorTrend

“I think it’s great that Elon Musk got to rebuild his childhood Pinewood Derby car.”

— Comment on Automotive News’ Facebook page from Corey Honabach

“No, I said ‘break the Internet, the Internet!!’ ”

— Ford spokesman Mark Truby on Twitter

“Oh, my f—— God.”

— Musk, after the first window shattered
