The comparison we all patiently waited has arrived, as the range-topping Porsche Taycan Turbo S is facing the Tesla Model S in Top Gear’s latest video review.
Porsche’s first dedicated electric model has been branded as the nemesis of the Tesla Model S, despite the clear difference in pricing. However, given that there are no full-size electric sedans around apart from these two, making the comparison was pretty much unavoidable.
It starts with the ever important drag race; in theory, the Tesla should be quicker to 62 mph (100 km/h) but the Porsche claims that the Taycan is the faster one on the road to 100 mph (160 km/h). Both cars apparently had over 85 percent charge in their batteries and after a very slingshot-like start, the world’s quietest drag race has a very clear winner (spoiler alert: it’s the Porsche).
The two electric sedans were then reviewed on the road, pointing out Tesla’s superior driving range (367 miles over the Porsche’s 256) as well as its wider charging network.
Despite being on the market for six years now, the Tesla Model S also offers the roomiest cabin of the two by a big margin, with plenty of leg and shoulder space for three adults in the back and bigger luggage spaces front and rear.
The Porsche Taycan Turbo S on the other hand is a much sportier car, featuring a tightly-controlled body, a much sharper turn-in, a superb steering and a braking feel that puts it in an another league compared to the Model S.
In the end, the Porsche Taycan Turbo S and the Tesla Model S Performance may share a similar appetite for quarter-miles but in every other area, they do things quite differently; the Model S is the more practical and convenient electric car of two, thanks to the Supercharger network, but if you value driving dynamics and chassis witchcraft, then the Porsche is the one to go for.
