Nissan’s ?little box’ with big attitude

Nissan called its IMk EV concept a “little box,” but one that showcases the automaker’s next-generation plans for the crucial K-car segment of its Japanese home market.

“The IMk is our vision for every day, every moment and every millimeter of life in Japan,” Nissan Senior Vice President for Global Design Alfonso Albaisa said when introducing the minicar at the Tokyo Motor Show last week.

The concept’s name uses the “I” and “M” from the company’s trademark Nissan Intelligent Mobility brand strategy, which trumpets Nissan’s development of connectivity, electrification and autonomous driving. The “k” signifies that the model addresses the needs of a niche that was established in 1949.

“The design is defined by sleek and charming micro-minimalism,” Albaisa said. But he added that the car is loaded with high-tech convenience and safety features, including a smartphone-enabled version of Nissan’s ProPilot remote parking system.

Another highlight is added spaciousness, which Nissan was able to create because of the car’s flat floor.

That element “transforms the size of this little box,” Albaisa said.

Shag carpet adds a playful and cozy feel that helps the IMk deliver the “ultimate in urban EV mobility.”
